I think the only thing that sucks on my rig is the sound "card" (Asus P5WD2 Premium Motherboard On Board).
So I'm looking for a sound card which allows me to play BF2 with sound settings on High

Specs:
Asus P5WD2 Premium Motherboard (without Wi-Fi and TV)
Intel Pentium 4 830D (Dual 3 GHz)
2 x 1GB GeIL Ultra Dual Channel RAM
Radeon x850XT PE 256MB

I can play BF2 1280x1024, settings on high, 4 x AA.

Onboard sux, I use a ~$25 SB Live! card.  Not sure what my settings are, but I can still hear ppl trying to creep up from behind to shank me.  If you want to spend some cash get one of those SB Audigy ZS cards.  I said f*ck that when I saw the price though.

yeah, i use the same thing.  it'll run about $100-$120US, but its awesome.  this is coming from someone using an SB Live! 24-bit.  i upgraded from using software decoding on lowest settings to hardward on ultra high.  you wont regret it.

X-fi wins hands down.
Get the el cheapo Xtreme Music version of the X-fi. The other versions have features a gamer does not need and the Fatality is just way too expensive for it's advantages (onboard sound memory that should theoreticly take some load off you processor and improve your games performance.)

Extra tip... get a good headphone wirh the X-fi. I am using the Speedlink MedUSA 5.1 surround headphones....

There are several discussions in the forums about headphones (search), but in my opinion the X-fi MedUSA 5.1 combo is the way to go. (Or else the Icemat Syberia).

Thank you guys. Maybe I can wait until my birthday in may

Just curious, what's the difference between the X-Fi Platinum, Fatal1ty (sic!) and Elite Pro

not much, just go w/ the cheapest one, the difference is sound card memory. fatality one has a front panel for ur pc, but a waste of money

Everything which is above Creative Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS (which is great too) is GREAT! But don't buy an external soundcard... You will have problems with EAX and the spoken stuff on BF2...

I think Audigy 4 is very good cost me 50€, makes real good sound, and i can also activate ultra high sound.
EAX 4.0 make it possible.

Hey SAS-Lynx what mainboard do you have NF 4 or intel.

I use this on ultra high and it ownz, 64 meg of its own ram and a chip = to a p 3.4

When you fire a grenade at the wall in high quality sound mode (every other sound card uses 64 channels to produce this sound) you get the nice shot sound then Boom as it hits the wall. When you fire the same grenade at the same wall with Ultra high quality sound with the x-fi (this can handle and does use 128 channels) you get the nice shot sound, then the boom as it hits the wall, Then you here all the pieces of plaster from the wall hitting the ground all round you. Its a must if u got the cash!!!

maybe someone in here could help me:

I have the X-Fi installed, it even shows up as an option in my audio section.  The highest it'll let me go would be "Hardware/High/EAX"...  As soon as I select "Creative X-FI/Low", I get the "incompatible hardware" issue.  I have it set on Game Mode, everything enabled as per their website, etc.  Any ideas?  (*I know I'm not the first, but I haven't read anything on how to get around it*)
