Make some porn related program, that filters it, sorts it, etc.
Lol
What, girls don't watch porn?Kimmmmmmmmmmmm wrote:

What the hell are you doing on the internet then?
Hack. That's what I do, and it improved my skills better then anything else would have. Go to uc-forum.com
Before anyone calls me a hacker and questions my legitness, I only hack to improve my programming skills. Otherwise, I play the game fully legit and the way it was made to be played.

When I don't have any side work, I keep a couple fringe projects which I constantly recreate in part to fold in new techniques/technologies.
I would just find something that I would need, like something that parses a webpage to get relevant data to what I am looking for. Or something that will make it easier for me to do my day to day work.
Just did one of those last-night+today. Wanted to search through a paged list of information, and the server didn't have such an option. Pages scraped 50 or so pages to a normalized JSON data file, rendered it as a table with jquery and added a table sort/filter JS widget.bf2gammer wrote:

Was fun, now the full 50 "pages" of data loads from a 34kb json file in zero seconds flat and I can search the whole list of info as I type.
Fun times.
Not that I've done it for a while, but I used to try and write mods for forum software (Read: PunBB).
I used to make small programs for ripping files off of websites i shouldn't have been able to access, but that got too boring and arduous trying to figure out all the nuances of some particular websites url scheme.
Then i moved onto small apps to organize shit on my computer but then i got lazy and now my computer is an awful mess.
Now i don't really do anything programming related in my free time, only for work. I mostly just play games when i'm bored.
