No pun intended in the title, but I am not getting any item drops...

Well, today I got 1 within the first hour of game time, then nothing for 4-5 hours... I remember when valve made this drop system, I seemed to get items on every map, now I barely get anything at all..

As for hats, I know they are rare, but come on, I think I have several hundred hours of ingame time in TF2, yet not a single sign of a hat...

Anyone else experiencing problems like me?

It varies for me. Some days I seem to get an item every hour, others I won't see a thing. I wouldn't worry about it.

As for the hats, that's just the way things go. I'm fortunate enough to have one (the Prussian Pickelhaube), and fortunate enough to have received it on my third day playing.

People have found, by looking at lots of data about items dropped, that every 25 minutes you have a 1/4 chance of finding an item. So going for a few hours without one, while unusual, isn't unrealistic. As for the hats, whenever the game decides you are getting an item drop, there's a 1/2000 chance that it will be a hat. It then chooses a hat. With those statistics, the fact that I found the Prussian Pickelhaube the day after the update is frankly astounding.

Because of those ridiculous odds, and the fact that I haven't had a hat since the very very beginning, starting today I decided to start using the idler program whenever i'm not playing. Other people have been using it for months now to increase their chances of a hat with no bad side effects so I thought 'why not?'

After all it uses almost no resources, acts as if you're in-game, waiting for items, and isn't any sort of trouble to have running. A guy on my friends list has been using it since the Sniper vs Spy update and has 5 of the original 9 hats because of it. So today I decided to start using it too and see how it goes.

So far it's found me an Ubersaw, a Dead Ringer, and a Backburner.

Yesterday I found maybe 5 things within 2 hours after not getting anything for a week.

When I started and only had maybe 6 items, 4 of them were l10 huntsmen.

At that point I realized that if I was going to worry about getting items I would end up very, very unhappy :S

Reward hats for:

5x Rounds with at least 30 points, at least a 3:1 KDR, and must be on the MVP board. PLUS, class specific requirement.

Scout: 20 combined kills + captures
Soldier: 25 kills
Pyro: Iono... 5k fire damage?
Demo: Combo of 10 destructions + either captures or point defense
Heavy: 20 kills, 5 assists
Engineer: Some combination of sentry kills, teleports, health
Medic: 20 assists, 3 ubers
Sniper: 15 headshots, 5 assists
Spy: Combined 20 backstab/headshot kills

Hat would be chosen after the 5th round for the class.

Or just reward them for completing all achievements of the class set (then hurry with the solly demo and engy update). Or something. Random is dumb.

The problem with ANY in-game reward mechanism like that is it will just be a massive return of the achievement server.

People will farm the hats, get the ones they want within an hour, and every single person in a game will have a hat on, completely removing the novelty of them.

If there was a surefire way to reward an outstanding round, or prolonged good gameplay with a hat (or medal), then it would be perfect. As it is, anything the player can have control over will be farmed to oblivion

It's odd that people are getting so up in arms about it - it's a hat for a character that most of the time you can't see anyway. Here you are moaning about not getting them when the damn things are pointless! Man you guys are lame!

That being said, I WANT A HAAAAT!

It would be nice if there was a way where you could feel that you were working towards getting a hat, or even a way of knowing when you were due for an item drop. I think the most annoying thing for me about the item drop system is that you don't know when you're coming up for your 1/4 chance and you have no idea when it's passed. If there was some notification just telling you "better luck next time" it'd be sweet. I mean I'm okay with getting the damn repeat unlocks because at least I know I haven't been forgotten about.

I was actually thinking of this last night.

I was thinking to myself, now what would be a good way to reward someone who has an absolutely incredible round. I came up with an idea.

For example. Valve could add a medal. It's requirements would be insane, and totally totally secret. For example, if you were playing Medic on Badwater, the requirements could be:

Do not die in the round.
Be on the cart when it reaches the end.
Get 6 kills, 2 of them Spies.
Get 20 assists.
Deploy 5 Ubercharges.
Get 10 captures.

You would then recieve a Medic Medal of some sort. Valve could even change the requirements frequently so keep people from knowing what they have to do.

In my head this sounded great. You'd be able to see who had had an amazing round, and must be a good player. However, as great as a system like this sounds in theory, people would just go to achievement servers and get kills, captures, assists etc until they recieved it.

There's nothing you can do. People will find out the quickest possible route to the unlock, and then go that route.

Which is why the current system, while unfair to many people, is the only way to distribute the hats while making sure they retain their rarity.

Who gives a shit about rarity? I don't. Rarity will cause bitching from the 90% that have not and gain support from the 10% that have.

Especially now that there's 3 hats per class, it would be a way to show "individuality" preferences and whatnot. It's a cosmetic choice and doesn't matter. Screw rarity. I don't think you're awesome because you got the scout's batting helmet, I think you won a dice roll and congratulations. Way to earn it, bro.

I think Valve should view hats as an individual choice for a player, not as a "omg i'm gonna spend the next 500 hours idle so i can get a hat for a class i hate". It may make players play more, but Valve doesn't get money from that. They get money from people who buy the game.

Edit: It doesn't have to be an epeen show of awesomeness that you got from a farming server. I just don't see why it should be 1 in 8000 every 25 minutes. I don't see why you should get a hat on average every 139 hours you play.

Having a hat is not about being special, it's about having a hat that not everyone else has. There's a fine distinction there and you're missing it: it's not personal achievement, it's that the hat becomes a boring sight if lots of people have it.

I like how there's a subtle message in your post though, bevo

you're basically saying: bawww I'm jealous, you didn't earn it anyway, and you wasted so much time on it so you must be stupid.
In reality they're, as uzique said a while ago, finally something rare. And it doesn't matter that they're rare, they're useless goddamn hats.

Well the problem is that Valve advertised the hats as being a large part of the update (the Day 1 page), so naturally people want them.

Edit: Apparently it just reached over 9000 idlers

I didn't say you wasted anything on it. I was watching a thread over on steam forums, just taking a poll of the average hats people had. Granted it was only 6 or 7 pages long but the average came out to be around 3. Yes, regulars to the forums obviously play more than the entire community, but that's a high average.

I've seen lots of people with hats indeed, it's fairly commonplace. It's not "WOW COOL" it's "ehh".

I think you're missing the point of my previous post. I'm not raging over not having a hat or the stupid system. What I'm saying is, it doesn't make sense from a business perspective. They continue to make money off of increased sales, right? So you haven't played TF2 and your friend who does talks with you once or twice a week, and every time you do talk he goes "OMG RAAAAAGE I STILL HAVENT GOTTEN A HAT I HATE VALVE", do you think that's going to you want to buy the game? Or would you rather your friend say "OMG It's taking forever to get this last achievement but I really want that hat!".

If they wanted something truly rare they're dropped 10x too often and shouldn't even be mentioned in the updates. THAT is something that would generate buzz. Not shoving 27 neat little items in our face and saying "Go play for 400 hours, maybe you'll get one for a class you don't even play". No.

Am I mad that I don't have a hat? Not in the slightest. Would I want a hat? Yeah, it would be nice. Do I think that it should be performance based especially now that there's 3 per class? Uh, yeah. At least one of them.

I don't have a hat yet, and actually don't really care about them, but I want to try out all the unlocks.

So far, I have found an unlock every 2-3 hours of playing.
What really pisses me off though is, that I already have 3 Blutsauger, 2 Kritzkrieg and 3 flare guns.
Also, I actually got several unlocks from the class milestones.

They should really hurry up with implementing that friends trading feature they hinted or disable picking up of doubles.
Otherwise this will be tedious if you're not a hardcore player.

No one considered the construction helmet, M1, Gas Mask or Headset hats, because they're part of the default models. By giving everyone hats like that, you'd just as well do the same.

Now unless there are enough customization items that everyone can look unique while at the same time having all the accessories as everyone else, however currently there are only 31 accessories distributed amoung 9 classes, so if everyone had all the accessories, everyone would use them all and it wouldn't be fun to have one.
