A SM vs Tau game would probably be more of a battle for the hearts and minds of an outlying human world. There'd have to be something about it that both factions want, and that the Tau would want enough to commit to beating back an Exterminatus. The "wave of enemies" third-party attack could come from a hive fleet.
Going by the story, not gameplay whether it'd be a videogame or table top.unnamednewbie13 wrote:
Uh huh. Which is why tabletop space marines scramble to close the distance vs tau before they get melted on the spot. Looks to me like if you were fighting Tau instead of Orks in this game, there would be no end to dealing with fire warrior ambushes from building windows. Regenerate from that. Hah. Also:
The irony of guns, is that they can save lives.
What difference does that make? The games are based on the same universe. Space Marines might have hard-ass armor, but the Tau are demons at ranged firepower.
More than just the armor, no point to explain how they are in the storyline. Just that Tau have difficulty with space marines compared to other armies in the Warhammer 40k lore.unnamednewbie13 wrote:

If played right, the Tau can circumnavigate large clusters of space marines with very little difficulty. Trouble crops up when dealing with teleportation and assault squads, though.
I'm talking about Lore and storyline of wh40k, not gameplay

So lore is supposed to completely govern an interactive experience where anything could happen?
Not saying tau can't beat space marines in the lore, just saying that tau have difficulty fighting space marines as they are super tough and strong.unnamednewbie13 wrote:

In lore and in gameplay, the Space Marines are still pressed to either close the distance or melt where they stand, and the lore Tau are obsessive-compulsively developing new technologies.
It would be interesting if they could subvert an entire chapter of Space Marines (and why not? several were lost to chaos) and outfit them appropriately They'd be more than just a simple gue'vesa auxillary.

There is a difference between subverting to chaos and subverting to tau, especially with the space marines. May be true that space marines are still pressed to close the distance but they can manage. Doesn't change the fact that tau have difficulty facing space marines, they still are challenging.unnamednewbie13 wrote:

The stories are different to tabletop and gaming.
Gaunt's Ghosts take on fucking all sorts of shit. No Guard should be able to do what they did, but because it's a story, that's how it goes.
On Tabletop or in DoW, Guard wouldn't last at all.
The point is, I'm all up for believing that Marines can easily hold off Tai, range or not, as the story's heroes are bad-ass.

Depends on the chapter. I'm not saying that one like the Imperial Fists would be likely to convert, but the circumstances that stranded guardsmen in Tau space in the first place may also later apply to some unnamed chapter, particularly if the leadership is unhappy with Adeptus Terra. Not much point arguing about this possibility, since GW could decide to do anything.
Space Marines can be tough to face for any race. That's the point of Space Marines. But they're an invincible kill-all faction.

You have a point, it is however very less likely than space marines converting to chaos in my opinion. Guardsman are a different story as they are basic humans. I am more of an Eldar or Necron person, personally by the way. Anyway, hopefully this game is as awesome as it looks.

IG/Tau is my preference (I'd love to combine their units in table-top play), but I'll always enjoy a good SM-on-Ork brawl.
You can by making 2 separate army sheets.unnamednewbie13 wrote:

Pro tbh. The gun sounds are like that of the original Command and Conquers.
