I know this may be old but a lot of people still might not know about this, and it might give the first people to get the 360 that still have a working one more incentive to get a newer model of 360, in case the HDMI slot and cooler-running, more energy-efficient 65nm hardware aren't enough.

So back in like November or December 06, Microsoft switched from using the noisy Hitachi and Samsung drives to using much quieter/faster BenQ drives.

This guy reports that it was not only quieter but the stutters and pauses on Oblivion are much reduced, in addition to having quicker and smoother load times.  He also reports that it takes slightly less time for the game to start up after being inserted.

I've heard also that it's less likely to eat discs as well.

Here is how to tell which drive you have by simply looking at the shape of the disc tray

i have a Hitachi.  yeah it sucks, but with a larger hard drive you don't really have to deal with loading from the disc.  not that i have a larger hard drive yet.  or even use my 360 more than half an hour a week.

Mine's from January 2009...so I'd assume I'm good.

I'd have to think so too, but it's not too much hassle just to look at the disc tray to know for sure.

Hell, you probably the have the 65nm GPU, if you don't mind could you look on the back of it near the bar code.  There is a number to the left of it right above the "Made in China" part and it will say any one of these:

16.5A
14.5A
12.5A

16.5A means you have all the same 90nm hardware that came with the 360 when it first came out, I very highly doubt that will be the case with an 09.

14.5A means you have the 65nm CPU revision.  This came out in like November of 2007 but I bought mine in March with a manufacture date of 12/21/07 and it was still a 16.5A

12.5A means you have both the 65nm CPU revision and the 65nm GPU revision, and if you bought an Arcade model, it should have a 256MB NAND chip on the motherboard which serves as integrated storage.

I have the Falcon model (Elite), not the Jasper model. But it's extremely quiet. Much more than my previous model which I'd gotten in December '06.

It says 14.2A though.
