I'm now trying to take territory around the great plains, moving south along the eastern coast of North America and am trying (without a whole lot of success) to explore northeastern 'Canada.' If I'm successful, I should at least be a hard nut to crack for Europe, but it's kind of like preparing for an alien invasion.
The expansion was more geared towards playing Japan. I don't know why I'm doing this.

Expanding my turf and [actively] exploring beyond what I can claim. Military 'alliance' with Iroquois. I'm not going to be able to expand into real naval tech until one of the coastal regions becomes a 'core province' in 38 years.

I was actually going to go for vassalizing the North American tribes I can reach as fast as I can before I get crushed by invaders. Hopefully I can hold them off diplomatically and with trade, but I don't need no stinking plague blankets. I guess knowing history is kinda like having wallhacks in this game.
