How do dvds work anyway? if a small drop of water spills on the top side and drips over the sides, will it spoil?
...i cant tell if this is a serious question or not.
if you scratch the printed image it can fuck it up but i think water drops should be fine if you get them off right away.

Water will not harm DVDs. Some chemicals might, but I clean smudges and such with soap and water right under the tap.
The only thing that will damage DVDs are major scratches to the shiny side, or direct sunlight in a car for example, where the disc begins to melt/warp.

actually, the shiny side is less vulnerable than the printed side. usually on the printed side, the part of the dvd that holds the data is almost directly below the ink. this is why if you scratch the printed side just a bit, it can fuck the dvd up, but the shiny side can take a decent amount of abuse.

The laser goes through the shiny side, but reflects on the backside of the printed image. If you scratch the printed image you will also scratch off some of the reflective material, (which is also as ThomasMorgan pointed out where the data is. Here's a random MSpaint drawn diagram.

There are significant differences between commerical "stamped" DVDs and DVD-R DVD-RW.
Stamped DVDs are the same as CDs....Big scratches are bad on the non-printed surface. R&RW are a lot easier to damage.
Are you asking about the game DVD or a DVD-R/RW?

Actually even minor scratches to the printed side of DVDs and CDs can be worse than major scratches on the shiny side! How can this be when the player read the shiny side? Well, actually the player doesn't actually 'read the shiny side' as such - it reads a thin wafer of metal sandwiched between layers of protective plastic - at that's the problem - to reduce on cost, the plastic on printed side is often thinner than the plastic on the shiny side, so it's much easier to scratch right through the plastic to the metal wafer from the printed side!Cyberwolf wrote:

but dont forget some cds like bf2 have an ink image printed which doesen't get scratched as easily. And how to dvds works? If i am correct, there are magnetic bits sandwitched between 2 protective coverings, and the laser in your dvd drive changes the polarity of those bits to write information on it.

Purified water will not harm DVDs. Water such as that which comes from my tap, which is heavy in minerals (such as sulfur for me mainly) can deposit into the pits in the DVD. This is what I'm told anywayCyberwolf wrote:

i dont think a little mineral diposit will harm a dvd, if it does deposite you can just wash it away and make sure you dry it with tissue or something.
