It has a lot to do with speed. For instance a camera that has an extremly high ISO setting can pick up stars quick enough so that they wont blur without a tripod. Actually, if it's quick enough you can be moving and it still wont blur.

The night driving stuff was shot at f/1.4 @ ISO 6400, with like 1/2s exposures. The 5D2 is so fast, I can actually hand hold it for star shots. I use a simple suction mount that goes onto the body of the car or the windshield.

My Rebelxti @ 1600 seems so pathetic after that..lol

mcminty can probably explain it a lot better than I can. The actual mechanics of the sensor is beyond my knowledge.

Yeah nice picture Zeidmaan. The trees work for sure, as they are part of the area. My only compositional critique is that you have cut off the feet of the people in the foreground. Something to consider for next time

Ok, you are right that the ISO is the sensitivity of the sensor. By increasing your ISO, you basically increase the gain the sensor's circuitry. As the ISO gets higher and higher, you see more digital noise being produced in the image. When you double the ISO, ie. from 100 to 200, you increase the exposure of the image by one "stop" of light. This is the equivalent of doubling your exposure time (eg. from 1 second to 2 seconds), or opening your aperture by one stop (eg. f/5.6 to f/4).

Kerry, the 5D2 can go up to such high ISOs and still produce a clean image because it's a much newer camera than the XTi (thus better signal processing technology), and due to the fact that it has a full-frame sensor.

I had to get a bigger card when I started shooting in Raw. When I first started I naively thought 2 gigs would be plenty. On a full day of shooting I can easily go over 200 pics and @ an average of over 11 mb a photo I fill it up before I'm done.

hehe i've got 1x2gb, 2x4 gb and 1x8gb.. and some older cards too like a state of the art 256 mb card! hahah
usually use just two at a time tho - one for the point n shoot and one for the dlsr

I wish I could share, but I told flickr to fuck off a few months ago after a whole host of my images had been downloaded and sold without my permission....I felt raped tbh...a lot of my hard work pissed on, and even after the killing they make on my subscription fees they have the nerve to allow this kind of thing to happen.
