I'm not liking this beta at all.

It's just to small. CoH was really the smallest scale you could make an RTS and it still feel epic. Not only that but the factions each only have a small handful of units, and I find myself using the same unit combos (and by combo I mean a Dreadnought and another Dreadnought) each time.

ya there is almost no diversity, and everything is too small. the pop cap, the maps, the bases. i mean, there is NO challenge. at all. if ppl already have to resort to using the smae unit combo over and over a week after it comes out, they need to fix things...

Yeah, but they won't change something major like the scale or the pace. Also the beta participation is huge, they only have big betas when they have the main shit nailed down and they just need more people to figure out the small bugs and imbalances.

I lol'd

Sounds like it's gonna suck. I reckon they put way too much effort into the single player and the tyranid race, without much thought about how they would translate into multiplayer.

i might torrent the game for the SP, but i am not willing to spend 50 bucks just to be able to play MP. tbh im gonna wait for SC2 if i want a MP RTS in that genre

I've just got my copy of Dawn of War 2 through the post today. I ordered it through game and payed extra for delivery, i've done this before and recieved the game a day before release. However l've just been shafted... I went to install it and you have to put the product code in Steam and its just said Not avaliable Sorry, but the following items are not avaliable for purchase in this country. Your purchase has been canceled. How fucking cake and arse is this!!!!
I assume l have to wait untill tomorrow to play this game.

There-in lies the problem. Valve started up steam, and after working out the kinks it became a huge success.

Nobody wants to share with Valve though, so they start their own services. Online verification is also their favorite way to avoid pirates playing their game.

Way to judge by skirmish mode...

If you're going to pirate, be a pirate. Don't try to soften it with the "I'm just doing it for the SP" excuse unless you actually plan on buying it. Those maps are even harder to design than the MP ones.

It could get pretty bad. If it gets to the point where I have to run 5+ individual clients just to have my games installed, that'll be it for gaming PC's.

Well so far l'm not fucking impressed! Apart from the fact l had to wait until today to be able to play this thing, its taken me 2 hours fucking about to get it to install, thanks Steam your great, now l have to wait another 3 hours for it to update before it will launch! 5 sodding hours to install a game that should take at most 20 bloody minutes!

I'm not a violent man, however l have a spear l brought back from Kenyan and l'm now scratching Die THQ on to the shaft. Please say l'm not the only bugger getting fucked around by this?

Guardsman, be thankful that Relic have patched the game since beta so quickly, you'd be even more pissed if it gave you a BSOD every time you try to run it.

@UN... Yeah I agree. Windows were crazy when they brought out windows live gaming whateverthefuckit'scalled and tried to charge for it. Failure. I'm still pissed they can't just swallow their pride, apply good business sense, and go into a bit of a partnership with valve. Or just fuckoff out of the gaming market completely. They stopped making proper Mechwarrior games.

- Retail -

First impression peface.

a) Installation. STEAM + GFWL. WHY?! The beta told me I was pre-loaded, so I open STEAM and go to enable the game. It begins a download from scratch, so download canceled/content erased. From the DVD: Several-minute waiting period while it installs 'required components' or some such crap. Come on, I have all that shit already. Game starts, videos unskippable at first (as always) and in great q uantities. They cut out the tyranid part of the intro cinematic, but I thought the original was more dramatic. Anyway, then I have to configure GFWL (again; already did it for the beta) to sign on with the game. How many usernames and passwords do I need to play a video game?

b) 'Bonus features.' 'Here is your exclusive code to unlock the Chapter Command Wargear set.' Nifty! No, you have to enter billing information into the GFWL website just to type in a code you already have on a slip of motherfucking paper. They don't just want your name. They want your address, zip code, state, , city and motherfucking telephone number. What? I didn't even have to do all this shit for Windows 7. What kind of buyer incentive bites you in the ass like that?

0/5 total retail experience so far. Before I go on, I'd better actually play it.

The code cannot be redeemed because the offer is not available in your region, or the offer has expired.
ASS!

Do not attempt to enter your code into the xbox web site, it will not work.  You need to download the Games for Windows - LIVE Marketplace application and once in the application, click Marketplace at the top, and you will have a redeem code string on the lefthand side you can click, and redeem your code there.
Can this be any more ass?

There is no redeem button in the in-game GFWL tab, the web shortcut took me to the x-box site, and now I have to dig around for more Microsoft bullshit.

THIS.

Edit:

a) Found the GFWL app sandwiched between 100 folders on either side, so I start it up. It's pretty much a carbon copy of Windows Live Messenger. Why does it even exist? If they bothered to make an in-game interface, why have this external utility running?! I am now running X-Fire, Firefox, MSN Live, GFWL, DoW2+GFWL and STEAM. Any lesser computer in my household would fucking collapse.

b) Code entered. Fifth time for this 25-digit crap (at least they don't make you use an NES gamepad. My shit is enabled, and all that address shit put on MS's XBox site is probably useless.

So far I've spent an hour playing this wonderful game without advancing beyond the main menu.

So far, so good on the campaign. The space marines are properly tough. One point of complaint is that you have to pay really close attention to each territory you conquer, because if you kill the endgame spot, you lose your chance to capture an extra asset there and it remains greyed out. It's kind of irritating, because the game told me to attack a bunch of orks, so naturally I skirterd them and ran into the final eldar group instead. Boom, endgame for that mission and perhaps some missed wargear as well. On to the next world.

Been forgetting to save after each mission like I did in the previous DoW's, or I'd have been willing to restart the mission...but I'm not about to throw a couple hours down the tubes with a restart. One nice feature would've been a 'replay' option right afterwards (maybe it's there but I didn't see it).

So yeah, if you can get around the enormous time-sucking aspect of service registration and client installation, the single player is decent.

OMG i got the dreadnought thing and I literally cannot hear anything over the sound of how awesome he is

Pretty much made me continue playing the game on his own.

protip for getting the most out of the campaign: do gene sample arc first, then forge and array last. Trust me on this one.

They wont make it though.

Homeworld was a bloody headbender though or what. People carry on about unique ways to do RTS... That was it imo. PERFECT space combat. Put my brain into meltdown once capital ships got involved though.
