no, there are moderate secular countries where christianity is a part of their traditional heritage, but religion plays no major role.

america is a country where christianity matters more than most other western democracies. america has old testament retributive justice, defunds abortion clinics and struggling women, and does a whole other bunch of bad shit in the name of religion or pandering to the religious bloc.

and what the fuck is 'moderate islam' if you discount the majority of muslim citizens and people? 'moderate islam doesn't exist'. hey dilbert, most muslims in the world live in moderate states and lead moderate lifestyles. 'yeah but the majority of its citizens aren't relevant'. ooooook. genius reasoning: moderate islam doesn't exist in the extremist fringes, terrorist cells, and destabilised countries that i'm exclusively looking at for my sample.

I'm talking about states, not citizens you retard.

I'm sure there were plenty of moderate germans, was Nazi Germany a moderate country?

Bonnggggggg

There are no moderate, secular muslim countries that I can think of.

And no the US is not a moderate country.

so you discriminate against muslims citizens coming into european states and decry the threat of islam because of immigrants, when what you are concerned about is muslim states.

gotcha. like a typical racist xenophobe you're as slippery as an eel when cornered on any of your 'principled stands'.

I could live with bans on Muslim immigration if they came along with increases in immigration and refugee slots for Christians living in Muslim majority countries. Considering the "Christian" right has never done a damn thing for them leads me to believe that the issue is more about race than religion. American evangelicals are the worst.

You haven't 'gotcha'd anything. I don't like any form of Islam, or any other backward cult. Obviously radical muslims are the worst.

Do I care that moderate muslims suffer under radical muslims, or are tarred with the same brush? No.

Reading some novels from older writers I will sometimes have to look up pop culture references. It just dawned on me now that someday older writers from my generation will make sophisticated references to Kim Kardashian and YouTube memes and that would be just normal.

Meditations - Marcus Aurelius (He of Facebook aphorisms fame)
I suppose it could be boiled down into five or six basic ideas, and the Introduction was as good a read as the actual book with useful context (fourteen of his children died, the one who survived wasn't really a winner)

So just finished In Cold Blood. Liked it and might read some more true crime novels. School starts back up in September and I am going to try to complete War and Peace this summer. At 1200 pages it would be the second longest novel I read so I am looking forward to it.

What are you guys reading?

I saw the lady speak back at college in 2013. I have a signed copy.

I don't agree with her overall thesis but did find her opposition to affirmative action and dislike of the Clinton presidency pleasantly surprising.

I'm opposed to affirmative action from an ideological standpoint, but recognize it is a solution to institutional racism.

I only support it when it comes to government jobs especially ones in public safety like police. Security forces should be representative of the people they protect.

i just won a £100 books voucher at work for some internal survey thing.

i would make inroads on my amazon wishlist but, in possibly the most mystifyingly stupid UIX decisions ever made by a major company, amazon's wishlist is now a scrolling-refresh system and not page-numbered. so i have like 1,000 books on my wishlist that i have patiently amassed and curated over the last 5 years. now to see a book i took an interest in 2 years ago, i have to scroll for about 25 minutes, 10 books at a time. this is so fucking retarded.

i'm taking the book vouchers to a brick-and-mortar.

A friend gave me a copy of Jordan Peterson's "12 Rules for Life". It is a philosophy and social commentary book dressed up as a self help guide. Here is a picture of the table of contents, and a sample of the index.

That does explain how you can fill up a book so quickly by just writing the same generally vague jerkoff sentence over and over.

peterson’s ‘philosophy’ is just a weird hodgepodge of jungian concepts which are themselves vague syncretisms of ancient greek, christian mysticism and heidegger. only people who don’t go to college for a proper reading list education think that garbage is insightful. it’s like someone fed parts of a philosophy syllabus into a banality generator. avoid and file next to other philosophy popularizing ‘self-help’ nonsense like alain de botton.

Planning on reading " Conservatives Against Capitalism: From the Industrial Revolution to Globalization" this weekend. Published by Columbia University Press which is a good sign. At worst it will be a good reference source.

I was thinking about buying a small series about fascist philosophy and thought from the perspective of the original
interwar fascists writers until I did some research on the writer and found out the guy is literally a fascist. Which shouldn't be surprising at all but it would have been a good reference to have.
