I started a new Ottoman campaign. Put a couple forts up by the Russian border, established trade with both Indias, snatched a few Persian territories and made a protectorate out of what was left. Working on alliances for the rest of the Muslim nations. On the flip side, the first thing I did was buy out a cherokee territory right as my Imam landed. Got a mosque and an army of east-bowing indians getting ready to rampage all across North America with Ottoman brute force backing. The silver is mine!!

Fin: The game's crashy, but still fun. It's pro when it works. And sometimes it works a lot...and sometimes it crashes when you don't want it to. Just keep saving.

Alright, I think I'm done for awhile until there's an expansion or some good mods. I have a few 'atmospheric' complaints about this game (edit: even though it's not everything; just what I popped into my mind):

* Is there even a point to hitting 'continue' after a battle's officially won? It just ejects you after a couple of minutes, and you can't even look around at the battlefield without a huge beige box in the middle of a greyed-out screen. I'd like to see a ship's boarding operation to completion, thanks. Plank walking? Battlefield executions?
* You've got to be kidding me. I can surround a wall-less colony city garissoned by a few dozen Frenchmen with four full armies and they won't surrender. The only purpose it serves is to get yourself some easy forts in enemy territories, as they don't seem as interested in fighting it out for those.
* Apart from map surrenders, all land units ever do is rout. So...why can't I take prisoners again? Shouldn't I be able to use them for negotiations?
* I understand the limits on rakes and gentlemen, but is it really necessary to nerf religion? I should be able to have at least one low-level 'priest' per religious building.
* There's not enough diversity in city building. And if you conquer a nation, you should get access to its technologies.
* Separation of church and state? Not so, even for the US campaigns. Playing as the US, I should be able to produce any kind of faith leader I want. And why are the protestants so united around the world? It'd only be fair to have splinter factions. I tried getting 'human secularism' to see if it did anything other than the bonuses listed, but it's a joke. Believe it or not, these people are happier if their old religion is stamped out.
* I can capture ships after sea battles. That's really awesome. So why can't I capture expensive inanimate land units like cannons? Why can't my soldiers harvest better weapons? Why can't my ships make use of (temporarily) captured port facilities for spot repair? Why? WHY?
* So I play as a Christian faction and chew into the Ottoman Empire. On the international relations screen, 'enemy of my enemy' boosts pop up on nations all around Europe. But they're by far outweighed by 'territorial expansion' downers. So...does Rome want me to eliminate Islam or what?
* For simulation purposes, religion should play a greater part in all of this. If I play as the Ottoman Empire and start to successfully gnaw my way into Europe, I should at least get golf clap support,, if not Jihad backup, from other Muslim powers. Nope. Can't Crusade, can't Jihad.
* Certain regions should give you global bonuses. Damascus steel, anyone?
* What happened to all the old Total War formations algorithms? Why are tomahawk warriors marching in blocky European formations?
* It should be much easier for a faction to make a resurgence. Indians, pirates, historically bellicose provinces, and so on.
* This game makes heavy use of the American theater, so why can't we play as more American factions? Where's the pirate campaign? Indian campaign? Hopefully that'll be upcoming in an expansion. Civil War, American Indian Wars (and civil wars) and scenarios like the Battle of Puebla. And maybe an Asian theater as well. When I got this game, I wanted to take Britain into China, but the world map was cut off just like in the older games. With the time it takes for each faction to load, maybe that's a good thing.
* About factions, why are they so bloody limited in Grand Campaign? I can't play the pirates (I guess you'd want to capture west-Atlantic islands and rad southern hemispherical trade), you can't fight off the Europeans as the American Indians, and you can't play a minor nation. If I can't play as Wallachia, can't I at least have a go as the Mughal Empire?
* This game needs more variety in its foreign relations algorithms. Pandemic 2 is a free online game, but is more interesting to watch sometimes.
* Two words: Oregon Trail.
* This game has died from dysentery:P

Er, sorry for the soapbox wishlist. I'm not even sure why I'm pointing these out. The ships in the game are pretty cool, but it has proven itself to be a bit of a rush job. I know all about feature creep, but they removed some of the mechanics from older games that were pretty fun. I'm sure some of this was considered, but judging by the crashes, they had bigger fish to fry.

I remember having to use a lot more imagination in playing games than is required nowadays, but while the technology's available, it'd be fun to see it (the tech) put to full use.

...alright, I'm done typing. Pain meds and eye strain are making me loopy.

i have two campagins at the dutch and the british, and for the dutch i was making around 40k a turn then all of a sudden i start to loose my money and i have no idea whats going on, same with the british, i went bankrupt all my armies split then im back to making money like normal, i dont get it.

yeah, same here with the dutch, took over most of western europe when i hit a point and just started bleeding money out

first i thought it was pirate raiders, but no way my trade was worth 16000

oh well, trying to tough it out as prussia; the goddamn poles and swedes are harrassing me to no end

Just start playing and you will learn by your self.
My tips:
- Don't start creating large armies straight away, you will easily go bankrupt.
- Don't start wars because you want one region, sometimes the wars will go on and on or such a long time that you will start losing money pretty quickly.
- Choose the brits, you are safe from invasions.

There is a new patch out with 14 new units, loads of bug fixes and unit balancing. Also:

    FIXES

    Audio:

    Sound loading has been made asynchronous, so heavy disc access is reduced to a minimum. This makes loading times faster and reduces any instances of 'stuttering'. Unit group sounds have also been improved, for more realistic group movement. The primary sound library (Miles DLL) has been updated to stop occasional clicking. And we've added more sound variation for unit deaths and musket fire.

    Campaign:

    - Several crash bug fixes in saves, movement, agents and logic.

    - Various optimisations have been made to AI and path systems to reduce the campaign map turn times.

    - When the pirates are destroyed and re-emerge they now maintain a status of at war with all and are unable to enter into diplomatic negotiations.

    - Added small ships on domestic trade routes from the trade nodes to home regions moving in the correct direction, i.e. with the flow of trade.

    - The AI should now no longer repeatedly sign a diplomatic agreement and then break it the next turn. Treaties are more valuable and adhered to.

    - We've fixed some border trade agreements allowing greater numbers of bordering factions to properly trade with one another.

    - Movement arrows now reflect the range of the selected units, not the whole army/navy.

    - AI will no longer counter-offer and ask for more money than the player has available.

    - Fixed commerce raiding taking money from blockaded trade routes.

    - Fixed navies getting stuck when forced to retreat from ports (tactial retreat).

    - Fixed rare inability to attack certain ports.

    - Fixed middle mouse button camera drag stopping working occasionally.

    - Made emergent factions be at war with the faction they emerged against if that faction is human.

    - Fixed various movement extent crashes.

    - Changed background income for minor factions.

    - Fixed diplomatic relations with emergent factions.

    - Tactical withdrawal will now always leave armies on the landmass containing the settlement of a region.

    - Changed war score system to make the AI more likely to accept peace.

    - Fixed crash when embarking and disembarking armies at ports.

    - Fixed trade ships not being correctly registered in trade nodes after splitting forces.

    - Fixed government change diplomatic effect.

    - Improved commerce raiding display on trade screen.

    - Faction specific text is now used in diplomacy.

    - Prevent players cancelling the movement of fleeing agents.

    Balance changes

    Units

    - Charge bonus generally increased across the board for all units and melee defence reduced.

    - Greater diversification of stats between different unit types designed to emphasise differences and improve balance.

    - Redone costs for all units for multiplayer to improve game balance which better reflects the actual battlefield worth of each unit.

    - Mob formation added in for Native American, irregular and some skirmisher units.

    - Spot distance for light infantry, skirmishers, irregulars, light cavalry and missile cavalry increased allowing them to spot hidden units at longer distances.

    - Russian line infantry stats have been boosted to allow them to compete more with other faction's line infantry.

    - Movement speed of all unit types reduced by 10%.

    - Ammo for light infantry increased to 20, line to 15.

    Land battle morale

    - Charge morale bonus reduced from 10 to 4.

    - Recent casualties, extended casualties and total casualties morale penalties increased slightly for higher percentages.

    - Rear and flank exposed morale penalties increased.

    Fatigue

    - Fatigue penalty for melee reduced from 18 per tick to 10.

    - Running fatigue penalty for heavy and light cavalry reduced from -3/-2 to -2/-1.

    Artillery Changes

    - Calibration area for cannons and howitzers reduced. Accuracy of non-round shot shot types reduced to compensate.

    - Muzzle velocity of round shot for cannons increased to make them fire lower and bounce more, accuracy also increased.

    - Lethality of shrapnel pieces reduced to match canister shot, range also reduced to 350.

    - Load time for special shot types for howitzers increased slightly, and range reduced to 350.

    - Calibration area for mortars increased, accuracy of round shot increased to compensate. Reload time increased slightly.

    - Accuracy of 18 lbr horse guard artillery restored to 65.

    Hit points of gun trains increased to 50, all guns and caissons to 25.

Also there's new downloadable content for the Steam price of a hamburger. I'm not sure they've earned it yet. Lots of my free time was sunk into restoring my progress from unrecoverable map states in save games.

Anything to do with the patch a while back? They changed the economy bigtime. Unit upkeep increased by something like 300%

Yeah I don't ever seem to have enough troops in and I am getting killed by troop costs, kind of sucks, my people are taxed to the max and I get screwed.

i hadn't been paying attention to the UK(playing as britan) I was not going to bother with Europe till after I had India, any way france had landed two full stack armies in Ireland, I am horrible out number and currently have an army coming back from America to dispatch them. I have all of the Americas and the bottom two regions of india and the island
