SO I am building my dream machine and you guys and girls have helped out a million times.  This time about the GPU.  I am trying to decide on either 2 7800 GT's in SLI or 1 7800 GTX.  I know for sure that if I come across the extra cash in the next week, I will purchase the 7800 GTX 512, but I dont see it happenning.

If your desperate and you want it now, than in my opinion go for the 2 7800's.  However, if you can wait, nVidia I have been led to believe are releasing a new card to rival the X1900XT in the next two or three months.   Sorry I dont have an exact date, but if I were you I would wait, and buy the best you can.

There will always be something better coming out "sson."

You are completely right of course, but what I failed to illustrate in my post was that the 7800 was going to be outdone by its newer generation of nVidia card, and that it might be worth waiting to get something better than it.  Sorry for not making that clear.

2 things to say:

1. ATI just announced its x1900XTX... N1!
2. nVidia will announce the 7900GTX at CeBit this year. (1st March)

So wait until March and look whatz better. Don't "waste" your money on a high-end card if its not high-end in a few weeks anymore.

Yes of course, but to me 500-600 on a card is not a waste.  I would use the 7800 for about another two years, so I am not asking what I should do but rather what should I buy now.

I can't say which one to get... my opinion would clash hard since I view from a practicality standpoint.  A 7800GT can be purchased for 300 shipped.  And the GTX for 450 shipped.  It's probably a good idea to get a single card of either right now and let the 7900's introduction bring the price down some so you can SLI up later.

That is what I was thinking.  Buy the 7800 GTX (possibly the 512 version) wait a few months then buy another for SLI.  With my system, I am sure one or the other would work great.

I had this exact dabate with myself.

I ended up going with one GTX instead of 2 GT's. Down the road, when they release thier new card, the GTX will probly go down in price and i'll pick another one up, giving me 2 7800 GTX.

I wouldn't suggest doing that.

The SLI cards have to be exactly the same - and I mean exactly. Two functionally equivalent 7800GTX’s, same clock speed, memory, etc - are not necessarily EXACTLY the same. They need to be bought at the same time, from the same manufacturer to ensure that they are EXACTLY the same. Electronics manufacturers are always upgrading, finding different sub-component sources, revising the bios, etc. So you might get lucky and get the same card latter down the road when you want the second one - but the odds are not with you.

not exactly true anymore.

SLI no longer requires that graphics cards be identical, but they must still
have the same core GPU.[b]
as long as they have the same core(2x6800, 2x7800 256, 2x7800 512), its all good

2 7800gt's are still better than a single 7800 gtx 512 mb imho, but if u want to upgrade it in the future, go w/ the 7800 gtx 512mb
