I have done some of these up grades it used to be to the point where i would go do something like heat up some food while i waited for the load and the verifying. after increasing my ram the load dropped but the verifying still took a while (and the game ran smoother.)

my latest upgrade was to swap my single sata and install
dual 100gig (7200 rpm) sata drives running raid 0
and the verifying time when from between 30-60 sec to 5-10 sec

also to note getting 2 smaller sata drives (or one more if you already have one) is about the same cost as upgrading to 2gigs of ram.

I somewhat disagree with some of the times.

I have one 512mb PC3200 stick, paired with one 512mb PC2100 stick.

When I press "join game", it is instantaneous, when I spawn, it is instant.

When I quit, my screen goes blank for a fraction of a second and I'm on the desktop. When I hit alt + tab, I'm on the desktop with full control in maybe 3 seconds, same to go back into the game.
I definitely would like to hear the magic formula you used to get this kind of fast response.  I'd be interested in those who are able to smoothly run around just after a Join Game and spawn selection.  Perhaps there's something we missed or something we haven't noticed.  Or maybe it's something that we know is there but we cannot implemented due to circumstances.

Well if you are using same resolution in game in in Windows it take no time to change to Windows or back to game. 2 GB of RAM make loading/verifying times much faster than with 1 GB but another important thing is CPU speed. When I was using 1 GB of RAM with 2.4 Ghz CPU those loading/verifying times was LONG. When I overlocked my CPU to 3.12 Ghz loading map didn't take that long anymore (in fact it was pretty fast) but verifying took still ages. And when I installed 1 more GB memory that verifying came much, much faster. With 1 GB it took minutes, now it take few seconds (no matter what map and in 16 players map I can even see that verifying text). Faster HDD helps a little too, but not that much as fast CPU and much of memory.

I have a gig of DDR500 and my results are just the same as what you say 2 gigs gets you. Although I do have two SATA-II drives in RAID-0. That helps loading and skipping issues majorly.

You can't really compare 1 gig with 2 gigs without stating what settings you used anyway. Someone playing on all low will have no trouble with even 512 megs of ram. Someone playing on all high will see the benefits of 2 gigs more than someone playing on low/med.

I'm upgrading to two gigs at the end of the month anyway though, just 'cus I can.
