They are doing this thing where they had to special ed kids sell rubber wristbands to support autism or something like that. My boss wears it and now I wear one too to kiss his ass.

those bands were super popular in the UK too for the longest time. all for a good cause, of course, but i just don't want to wear (yet another) one to track basic fitness metrics. at the moment the only fitness data i track is the stuff my iphone captures from my pocket. i don't want to wear a watch or bracelet all day for the advanced shit. it's too much. a signet ring, maybe.

They became popular with the Lance Armstrong thing.
https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/41Z2FJzjHfL._AC_UY1000_.jpg

I googled "Lance Armstrong Twitter" to see what he was up to. I assumed he went MAGA. Google Auto completed a suggestion "How did Lance Armstrong Die?" Funny thing is he's not dead...

Maybe we should give smart rings AI. I am sure people would appreciate "You are having a medical emergency" notifications in bed.

Seiko Presage is a great watch. Good time pieces at reasoble prices. Its the first watch it bought myself and helped get me into horology.

Im coming around after years of loathing the look, use, and feeling of smartwatches. I'd like a GPS I can take on longer hikes/backpacking trips and to use for yardage during golf rounds, but im struggling to justify the use cases vs. the price point for most smartwatches.

I bought my gf the Apple Watch S10 for Christmas. She loves it.

Same. Never been a fan of ear buds (wired or wireless). Refuse to wear them except on airplanes.

Bought a new sight rib for my revolver, in steel instead of aluminium and with a rail for an optical sight.

I'm going to track the delivery and keep you updated.

OK, not really a great start, spent five days going the wrong way, seems to be going west now though.

because, of course, nothing says Globally Concerned Citizen like having a widget shipped 15,000km around the world.

aren't you a CAD engineer? shouldn't you be 3D printing this stuff using locally sourced resin or some nonsense by now.

Could do but there are some fine parts which would need to be machined, I print plenty of stuff.

it bothers me that your map is in miles, dilbert.

in your defense, it's probably not as if this thing is traveling alone in the back of someone's f150 (for very far, at least). if it were, i'd expect the driver to stop and take its picture at various american landmarks they come across.

Somewhat less harmful than the average backpacker carrying a bottle of water with them.

Looking promising, not holding my breath.

i mean, yeah, backpacking isn’t an advert for an eco-friendly lifestyle. if that’s your bargain then may i suggest shutting the fuck up about your eco credentials?

my point is you are anal and pedantic and score points over everyone else's lifestyle choices, no matter how minor they are in the grand scheme of things, and yet deny yourself nothing, really, when it involves your own hobbies and pursuits in this globalised, climate-changing system of supply and demand and next-day distribution. how very curious! episode #751 in dilbert the not-adult's series of 'everyone else is wrong and stupid and i am always right'.

you cozen yourself with the delusion that you're making great sacrifices but don't think twice when you actually want something. if other people have more hobbies and pursuits or a marginally bigger footprint, you like to lord over them. but really what it comes down to is the fact that you don't have much of a life, hence a smaller footprint almost by default than an outgoing person. you're a very convenient climate ascetic. the degrowth miser. not the most principled sort of commitment, is it?

And I'm fine with that.

But really, the average 'eco-warrior' tourist who flies everywhere is doing more damage when he decides to take an extra 300ml of water than I am having a gizmo shipped maybe once a year.

who is this 'eco-warrior tourist' you speak of, and why do they amble so like a straw man?

you're the one continually trying to make a point and show of your eco credentials. not only that, but in any discussion on the matter, you're the one who continually stresses the consumer side of the equation, putting the emphasis on individuals and their own decisions (or rather hypocrisy), focusing on lifestyle and purchases to an excessive degree. that's been your repeated habit.

‘Consumption produces production,’ as Marx wrote. ‘Consumption furnishes the impulse to produce and also provides the object which acts as the determining purpose of production.’
and yet you partake in the same conveniences and consume just as freely as anyone else when it's actually in your interests. how curious.

I bought a house.

2500 sq ft (760 m^2).

Built in 73 and has popcorn ceilings which is priority #1 but have to get them tested for asbestos first.
Then we're having someone come in for a top to bottom kitchen overhaul.

Nice big backyard for the dog which is concerningly too high of a reason we bought it.

Bought a new watch. I think its this one

The $150 watches were a bit clunky and not really the style I wanted, the $240 watches are 'ecodrive' ie solar powered and should never need a battery.

This is the normal lifecycle of my watches - assuming they don't just get smashed.

Run ok 2-3 years
Battery replaced, runs six months.
Battery replaced again, craps out quite soon or something else fails - this time I couldn't adjust the time for daylight saving.

After I'd paid for it and the girl had gone off to adjust the strap I noticed another display thing hidden away with cheaper watches which would probably have done the job.
It would have been a bit mean to reverse everything at that point, and I was completely peopled out having picked up a new pair of glasses earlier so I said nothing and took the watch.

Now the waiting game begins

Will it crap out

Will it get smashed
Watch has made it to 10 months, quite badly scratched now - that'll teach it to not be scratch-resistant I guess.

pre-ordered these small-production monitor/booth speakers for my eventual soundsystem overhaul. a significantly cheaper component than the main pair of speakers (plus optional subwoofer), to come later ....

they come with a top-quality amplifier and digital conversion circuit, so that i can make use of some room-adjusting DSP features (unlike with passive hi-fi systems). specifically, the brand allows you to toggle between flat-response 'monitors' like you'd get in a mixing/mastering studio, and a slightly warmer, more rolled-off and lively setting for dj'ing and enjoying. a perfect all-in-one solution.

i'm still absolutely gassing for the main hi-fi but it's too much money for now. i have too many other pressing 'adulting' costs at the moment. unless i opt to get married in a wendy's ...
