There was in COD4, but it's rare to find servers with people who use it.

Despite everyone's problems with this game, the biggest and most obvious technical flaw has been overlooked thus far:

The sound engine ist fucking kaputt.

Seriously, guns sound like they're being shot in a room made of foam- muffled isn't even the word. My BAR sounds like it is made by a toy company in South Korea with a penchant for dubious health and safety records. All of the general sound-effects in this game are ridiculous; grenades explode with the same plosiveness of a well-delivered wet fart, rewarding the player/victim with about as much satisfaction and surprise.

Not to mention the fact that footsteps and sound-effects (e.g. bomb plants) are severely broken. I've played in 2.1 and 5.1 sound-surround and in both modes the sound-effect is basically inaudible-- how are you meant to play tactically and strategically in a clan-match when the sound system that you are heavily-reliant upon fails to deliver? Anyone firing a gun from more than 50 yards away is either completely silent through some strange miracle of sound-wave science, or hence otherwise sounds as if they're firing BB's at you from a spud-gun... whilst stood on the other side of the planet.

I'm not sure if the sound-engine and processor/modulator was specifically designed for the console chipsets or what, but so far people are reporting rampant problems with the audio both on hardware cards (e.g. Creative X-Fi) and Windows onboard. It's pathetic, the immersion of the game is somewhat diminished by the fact that I may as well be playing a Charlie Chaplin silent-movie with guns, Nazis, exotic locations, tanks, rabid hounds and... well, ok, maybe just a silent game.

UNINSTALLING IT RIGHT NOW!!
Did you even watch any of the multiplayer trailers or research any information on the game?  If you did, you wouldn't have installed the game in the first place.  Multiplayer = mercenaries in WWII setting.

After fixing the unhandled exception error, I played it long enough to know it sucks before crashing to a directx error.

Also, LOL@beta, this has to be packaged and in stores ready for sale in at least 12 days.

The whole point of the beta is to gather up what needs to be fixed and fix those bugs/glitches in a patch after the game has been released.  They're more than likely not going to fix anything since the game is going to be released soon.

Amen, the actual gameplay is fun. I've played the Call of Duty series since the awesome-conception of the very first, and think that people nowadays need to recognise and adapt to the fact that popular FPS series are aimed at two shared consumer-markets: PC and console. Expecting a flawless and PC-tailored game nowadays is just wholly ridiculous. Play the games for what they are: down-shifted, casual, a good laugh with mates etc.

Despite the technical flaws and general hardware troubleshooting that is being (widely) reported, the actual gameplay and core elements are fun. They don't really disappoint me... I wasn't expecting anything more than a Call of Duty 4 reskin / repackage-- after all, why would Infinity Ward / Activision / Treyarch elect to do anything different? Call of Duty 4 was a huge commercial success.

I'd rather not accept the downward turn of the market and keep playing my old games tbh.

Never said you couldn't or indeed shouldn't. Was more talking to the people that expected Call of Duty 5 to be some miraculous throw-back to the 'golden days' of CoD1/CoD2, just because they were returning to cash-in on the World War II thing all over again. Nuh-uh, does not compute.

lol, I didn't see anybody saying that here...

Call of Duty has gotten worse every time they released a new game, I wouldn't expect that trend to change.

People were inferring it through their complaints and obvious no-brainer criticisms.

Stop being an obstinate preck and go flamebait someone else, preferably someone you can more easily have E-Peen dominance over? I'm sure there are other threads here where you can parade your awesome elitist taste in games.

CoD2 > CoD1 = CoD4 > CoD 3

IMO

I barely even remember playing CoD1

It was the console port to the Xbox...was it Big Red One? I forget.

edit: wait, that was CoD 2...fuck, which CoD game was on the Xbox?

As much as I loved CoD2, CoD1 was a lot better

CoD 2 was like a remake of 1 except 1 had firing mode selection, and cod2 added holding breath...

I disabled "Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device" under "Sound, video and game controllers" in device manager.

This may or may not fix the problem for you since I tried several solutions and failed before I found this one.
