My opinion: Yes.

I'm just out of high school, almost half way into my freshman year of College, and on the prowl for a career.

These past months have got me worried. What is in store for the millions of kids like me? I want to raise a family in this world, if there will still be one left. I mean, almost all of the baby boomers will be retiring within the next 10 years, taking most of the nations retirement funds with them, along with social security, medical benefits, etc.

Not to mention this schenanigans of an economy "situation" the world has.

Now, I may not be as well versed in politics as the rest of you, but I know what I need to know for my future, and for the first time in my life.. I feel that there could be trouble just around the corner.

what are your thoughts?

I know I'm going to get mine and tell anyone who wants to take it away to shove it.

There will be a crisis, there will be failed attempts to fix the crisis, but I am confident that there will be some type of resolution to the problem before I die.

That will crash and burn when everyone and their dog moves across the border for your wonderful socialized medicine and social security.

I was thinking this same thing, actually. Especially when that bailout bill passed (now we're just delaying the inevitable). I'd like to have kids and it'd be a joy, but on the other hand, I don't know if I would want to bring someone into this shitty world and make them suffer if it's really going to be that bad.

The economic crisis is a market correction...bubbles have to burst eventually.  Yes, it sucks right now, but the market will return to a higher level (then bubble, burst, regain...rinse, repeat, ect...)

The failure of the New Deal programs is a longer term problem.  The problem is SS is built on the assumption that the later generations will always be able to fund the current contributers.  Unfortunately, baby booms and demographic transitions (especially in advanced nations) throw a wrench in that notion!

So, what do we do?  My advice is to educate yourself (and seek others who critically look at policies), then vote for the leaders who have a workable solution.

I believe a free-market/libertarian approach will work the best, but educated minds do differ.  Go do some research!  (Maybe even run for office someday...)

Take it from someone who has been through economic and "earth-shattering" stuff like this 3-4 times ... you need to learn how to temper the fear that gets hyped by the media.  They are horrid in the way that they make the world fear for no reason at all, but that is their job - fear & drama sells.

Things are not bad.  Things are actually phenomenal compared with just about every period of world history.

Just stop reading and listening to the news and you will be OK.  The only thing in the news that is really meaningful is your local weather forecast.

I hate to admit it, but the Medical System here is the best system in the world imo. And the school system is actually pretty damn good as well (I know I've ranted about it sucking before) - way better than the American at least.

Sure, our incomes are taxed 50%, VAT is 25% and they double tax our income with Treasury tax (or w/e), and inheritance tax. For what you buy a real basic 3-series for here, you can buy the most pimped out Jaguar XK-R in America. Everything is expensive, but fuck it, I think he have the best system in the world atm.

The difference I see now between today (not specifically the economic falling out and what not, just in general the past ten years) and past crises is that a major problem now is the common man doesn't fully understand what is going on in his government. The complexity of foreign policy, our economy, and the intersection of the two is really through the roof, and no one is explaining it in simple terms because there are no simple terms. People are more uninformed than ever, and honestly that isn't their fault. Just to keep up with what's going on, much less analyzing it takes maybe an hour a day, and some people just don't have that hour. Candidates come along with various solutions to the problem and uninformed people may be voting for the person they truly think will be able to fix the problem, but they don't understand the entire circumstance.

It's a problem inherent in the size of the system, and what I see as being really the biggest problem of our generation.

Pretty much the same here in Iceland.

Except our economy is fucked right now. You can't even buy foreign currency unless you have a plane ticket to proof that you are going to said country these days...

If I was ever going to move anywhere else to live I would move to Norway (or maybe Switzerland... maybe). My girlfriend and I have even lightheartedly discussed the idea. If everything goes well for me in the next few years I may have a PHD to my name and that may open a few doors for me in terms of settling in other countries so who knows... she works in early childhood education, a field in which Norway is a major leader, and one of her main concerns is that her qualifications may not be regarded as highly in Norway as they would be in other countries!

You hear that lowing... I love socialism so much I'd move to an even more socialist country than Ireland!

You'll be fine. The whole system will collapse and be rebuilt within about 4 years I reckon. And the next boom-bust cycle will begin. What inventive means can we come up with this time to overshoot sustainable levels of growth..?
