I know it's supposed to get fun later on, but that takes atleast 2-4 months.
The 'learning' skills are even more of a stupid mechanic (should be learned early on, so the pay off later, but this makes the first 1-2 months unbelievably boring).

yeah I stopped eve after 2-3 monthes, yahtzee said in his review its like the game doesnt want to be played, and you get rewarded for not actually playing the game

*edit and yeah voyage century was pretty fun for a few days, not sure how it is now, but when I played the economy was whack and its a grindfest with melee combat, and its also very cash shop dependant IIRC

for shits and giggles make a Runescape account and scam nubs.

Maybe America's Army (in all seriousness)?  I heard it's free and worth a look, not sure how many play though.  (I know it isn't MMO, but it's a free FPS suggestion.)

Come play Ultima Online with me on Devinity... Its free, and the game is old as fuck so it will run on anything. I'll help get you started if you want, but I just bought a house so I am broke again.
I've played this game too, and its pretty fun. Its actually not a free game, but there are plenty of player run servers that are free.

Its a bit old now, but still pretty good. They also released the client for free so you don't even have to find that.
I like that unlike most other RPGs instead of gaining EXP to level up there are just a ton of different skills, and as you use them they gain individually up to 100%. Obviously gains slow down the higher the skill is. This means you don't have to play a certain class you can build a character how ever you want.

You can buy houses, own vendors and make weapons, or just steal things from other players.

Divinity (one of the player run shards that mimics the old days of the game before they newbed it up) also has open PVP so out side of the towns you can attack anyone. Attacking people or committing crimes make you temporarily attackable by anyone, and killing too many innocent people make you permanently attackable by anyone. Its pretty good for PVP if you like that.

One of the classic MMORPGs, and free to play.

(I just want some others to come join me...)

If you want a nice, relaxing, MMO thats reasonably priced with good gameplay and graphics, try Guild Wars.

Guild Wars is not an MMO so much as it's an instanced chat room.

To different degrees. AB is about as massive a combat situation as you can get, and it's still a paltry number...and restricted to PVP. Tell me when you can assemble a force beyond 8 players to scour the Underworld.

edit: I'm not trying to rag on GW (I've got all the expansions), but it's as much an MMO as an FPS is with a pre-game chat system.

I'd say that on the Blizzard scale, it's stuck roughly between Diablo II and World of Warcraft.

I suppose I'll take a look at ultima. Any more suggestions for a laptop platformer or so? Death's link was pretty good, but I was kind of confused by the gameplay.

Could try Ragnarok Online, and maybe Flyff?
RO now have a free server which ain't bad. Flyff, hmmm the gameplay or depth is anything to scream and dance about, but i played on the PvP server when it first came out, and the community was excellent. Plus they'll both run easily on any laptop

My friend says Warhammer is good. But I've never played it and wouldn't get it cuz of subscription fees.

If I ever managed to find time for a job, I would probably get it. Instead I'll probably just hold out for the Star Wars MMO. $50 + 14/month is a bit much at the mo.

If you ever managed to find time for a job, you wouldn't have any left for a grindstone video game.

Yeah sounds about right.
Also find Razor, it makes connecting to the right IP much easier...

When you patch it follow this guide: http://haazen.proboards3.com/index.cgi? … thread=713

basicly patch up until you see it start to download 6._______ as soon as it starts to download that hit cancel, you want the last version of patch 5.

after that delete the autopatch icon and use razor to launch UO.

The shard (what they call servers) that that guide is from is a HUGE noob server, don't play there

Razor has a few shards pre-added to it, I recommend divinty... Not only is that the one I play on (so I can help you out) but it has enough people that its not deserted, and few enough people that you will actually still be able to find space to place one of the larger houses. Its also mirrored after one of the better times in UO's history...

If you need anything explained (including the game itself) PM and I'll help you out. I accepted your request for xfire too.

That free thing for planetside was from march '06 to march '07. Wasn't worth it anyway.

Imo your best bet would be Warhammer Online, not too much grind and awesome PvP.

The EXE I downloaded is ultima 2d... and starts at version 6.0. something. Seems like a pain in the ass to play some game I know nothing about. Screenies aren't exactly amazing either.

lol, you wanted an old game that would run on whatever and your complaining about graphics?

ultima 2d is the one you need... The "pain" requires running an updater, sitting there, then hitting cancel...
I dunno where you downloaded it from, I though even the one on UOs webpage was an older version but you can use this if you still want to try it.

Neg... re-read the OP. I wanted an MMO AND an old game to run on my lappy. My lappy won't even have internet access when I'd be playing... the MMO is completely separate
