One other question - where's the best place to have my armor repaired at? My Outcast armor only has about 21 DR right now and is only half repaired.
I get ammo/repairs at Rivet, from Flak + Shrapnel. Mostly because I've killed all the other merchants there and every other arms dealer around. I mean shit, why should I BUY your stuff when I can nick it off your corpse? Some people just don't understand the word 'bargain'.
Heh. Well, I'm a good character this time, so that's out of the question.

I actually did get my stuff repaired at Flak and Shrapnel's, but it always tells me that I can't repair past 48 or 49%.

You can probably get it better at the armory in the Citadel. PITA to run all the way down there, I just use rivet for convenience.

Also, Ranger Armor > Power Armor.
Haven't gotten to them yet. I was actually disappointed when I got the Power Armor (which was like 30 minutes ago)... it didn't have much of an advantage over the Talon Merc armor I was wearing.

I've currently got on some Brotherhood Outcast armor though which I got off some fallen Outcast member who died in a random encounter outside Vault 112. What's the best armor in the game anyways? T-51B, I'd assume.

Spoiler (highlight to read):
Also, giving my Stimpaks to what's his face (Garza, I think) in the Taft Tunnel was a ripoff. He died anyways! Only Agincourt and Dr. Li survived. Gay. Fun quest though, it's good to have the Bloody Mess perk and watch Enclave soldiers in Tesla Power Armor completely obliterated. I kinda skipped over Tranquility Lane though and just went to the abandoned house and activated the Chinese invasion. Oh well. I made a save there though so I can try all the options at a later point.

One other question - where's the best place to have my armor repaired at? My Outcast armor only has about 21 DR right now and is only half repaired.

I'm also pumped for the DLC due to 1) 100 more achievement points, totalling 1300 after all 3 packs 2) Gauss Rifle 3) New Power Armor 4) Killing commies.
@ Repair

Invest all that you can in the trading caravans, one of them will then be able to repair up to 75%

I just started the game. I have got out of the vault and found megaton. talked to some people etc got some money of some silver bird and gave it to the bar keeper for information about my dad. But its put this marker on my map (GNR?) And its going to take years to get there, how can I get there quick / do something else?

Basically I want some top tips for a beginner.
How to get weapons / money / get on with main quest etc.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Semi-spoilers below. Nothing too major.

Spoiler (highlight to read):
The marker will lead to a subway tunnel filled with Feral Ghouls. Fight your way through and follow the signs to GNR, and get the Fat Man launcher off of the dead Brotherhood of Steel guy laying over the fountain. You'll encounter a Behemoth. Take him down with the Fat Man (though it's not necessary, I did it with a couple frag grenades). Go into GNR, talk to Three Dog. He'll ask you to repair the station's signal and give you a new quest in which he'll give you information on your father's whereabouts. It's not necessary to do it, though. You can just go to Rivet City (either on your own or through Moira's quest) and talk to Dr. Li. She'll give you your next quest and you'll be on your way.

Find Mr. Burke in Megaton, he'll help you acquire some money, either way you choose to deal with the situation.

Talk to Moira and help her out.

or

Take/Steal stuff and sell it, then buy weapons/ammo etc.

or

Run about and just find places.

Don't "Just get on with the main quest", your gameplay experience will be very very short.

Tip:
Put lots of your points into repair, later in the game it will be very useful when enemies get tougher and your weapons start breaking.

very true. Lock pick is quite handy as well, sometimes for ammo crates and safes for money.

Make your decisions with the skills. Speech is a great one (unique dialogue, and influence) Small guns (for your Assault rifle, shotty, sub, pistols, rifles. All of which you will no doubt use alot first time around) Maybe try energy weapons, i never did but they seem to be quite powerfull, so im guessing the more skilled you get the more powerfull they become?!

Every time I have taken it I get Fry cook haha, I thought that was the only outcome. I picked random answers and got that too.

The game is trying to tell me something!

Always go a half tanned white guy. I should go a black or azn guy and fill out the same answers and write a complaint to Bethesda

Aww. That would've been brilliant. Though I'm sure they'd get plenty of angry e-mails, especially after seeing the laughable article about RE5 being in Africa and being racist because of it.

Maybe if your guy was azn you'd get "scientist" "doctor" or "mathematician".

Okay...The Replicated Man was probably the easiest quest in the game.

I mean sure, it'd have been nice to get the plasma rifle, but there are others. It's not necessary...and I leveled up to 10 and got -gasp- 50 caps instead.

Yeah but c'mon, a sweet Plasma Rifle and a new perk (Wired Reflexes; better chance for criticals in VATS I think) is so much better than 50 caps. 50 caps is nothing, tbh.
