It's not even remotely equivalent. The law has already been changed, they won. This is simply the latest in a long line of social media driven moral outrage stories. It's way more kony than parks.

the law doesn't have a moral mandate. law and public morality are different. gays can still face social ostracism and prejudice even though they are now protected in law as equals. this clearly is about the toxic social attitudes being widely prevalent – even in offices of civic power that are supposed to dispense equally.

this isn't complicated jay. kony? wtf.

Uzi, if it was widely prevalent there would be more than one clerk in the news, yeah? There are hundreds of counties in this country and the activists found exactly one to use to generate moral outrage.

I asked my wife a few weeks ago what all the people who had dedicated their lives to marriage equality would do now that they had won. If ever smaller vindictive witch hunts against the religious are the end result then it's just pathetic.

you can replace gays with blacks and segregation.

imagine if some dipshit in the sherrifs office in bumfuck bama tried to enforce segregation.

Then that sheriff would go to jail. So what? It's a local problem, not international news or a sign that a problem is universal.

The news is very good at getting people riled up without context. How many parents are terrified of having their kids abducted because of sensationalism when they're more likely to win the lotto jackpot than to have it happen? Fear and outrage get ratings and page views and sell advertising. Congrats, you just bumped Coca-Cola's stock with your moral indignation.

The activists? She's not even giving marriage licenses to straight couples out of her back-asswards logic of "There. Hurr durr now I'm not discriminating against anyone particular."

I think that's for the gay community to decide, not you. if you think gay people are welcomed and treated as equals all over the United States now because of a Supreme Court edict written down on parchment somewhere, you are very silly. this woman isn't an isolated case. she's part of a huge demographic in the states: the religious, fundie, Bible Belt living right. she is not an anomaly among this community. she's in the limelight because it's particularly errant that she is dispensing a civic duty of the state according to her social beliefs.

She's a government worker refusing to do her job because of religious convictions. She's not representing anything but herself. Yes, large parts of this country are bigoted and intolerant of gays. The same is true of rural regions throughout the world, not just here.

The reason this is news is simply because people like to point and laugh at people with the "wrong beliefs" from the safety of a crowd. The people who were going to her office every day requesting marriage licenses, they're the ones actually doing shit. The rest of you are just gawking.

she's not representing anything but herself? so her views are autochthonous? no. they are the social beliefs of a group belief system. a group that forms a huge core of the religious-pandering right in America. parts can stand for wholes. it's how comprehending a massive mass such as the U.S. polity kind of works. your insistence that she's an individual on an island is hilarious. you are arguing this incredibly cynical point about the media and 'gay bullies' whilst denying the patently obvious subtext of this news story: that, whilst the law is writ, long standing social changes are tectonic and lag behind. the struggle for gay equality isn't over. they have their equal right to marry by Supreme Court edict, but a large portion of the U.S. electorate are still against them.

thats the same as saying segregation in the US is a local problem or apartheid was an S Africa local problem.

She's a government worker refusing to do her job because of religious convictions. She's not representing anything but herself
a government worker shouldn't allow their personal beliefs to affect their job. you of all people should know that.

The reason this is news is simply because people like to point and laugh at people with the "wrong beliefs" from the safety of a crowd
It's not about right or wrong beliefs. If she did the same shit before the supreme court ruling people won't say much since it's not law. This is a woman going out of her way to defy her legal obligations and went so far to be held in contempt of court. She had orders from people above to do her job, she refused, got jailed.

i think people just find it a bit delusional this woman can be, as she sees herself protecting the 'sanctity' of marriage yet shes been divorced multiple times (which is very unchristian if you will).

There are 3,143 counties in America. One county clerk has refused to issue marriage licenses. 0.03%. Stop the presses!

how naive can you people be to think the legal declaration is the be all and end all of this matter. i bet you were ecstatic when bush stood on the deck of that aircraft carrier and declared 'mission accomplished!' as well.

of course she's the ugly nail sticking above the boards that is being hammered down in this case. most bigots probably cherish their freedom or at least their job above their gay bashing. but you're acting like her views on gay marriage are this freak abomination; it's legal so the majority of America are instantly cool with it, right? uuuuuuh

This is honestly why no one takes your generation seriously. All the instantaneous and hyperbolic reactions to the most minor of events. I can't tell you how glad I am that social media didn't exist when I was a teenager. It would've made me retarded.

Were her views bothering you? Did you know who she was last week? Why do you care? Because it's trendy? Next week it will be someone else that the mob will attempt to destroy over something minor or taken out of context.

jay you are comparatively retarded and poorly read compared to me and 'my generation'. get off your high horse. I am more learned than you in almost every measurable way. so don't start lecturing me on my ADHD dramatics, as if I'm not arguing about an actual, extant thing.

the reason this stuff is in the news is because it's one of several ongoing cultural wars in the west. gay rights is a generational-demographic sea change. this story is delicious bait to the media because this woman embodies BOTH the reactionary social views of many Americans AND the vestments of state. she's a state clerk with fundie beliefs. that's why there's the firestorm around her: she's the ground zero of this particular culture war. she sums up both sides of the argument. she's the individual where the federal law clashes with the ingrown social belief. the fact you can't analyse this simple media conceit perhaps suggests you should stop lecturing people.

this week in Europe all the papers are ablaze with this photo of a dead Syrian child who washed up on a shore somewhere. jay would be the guy going "why do you care? did you know this child last week? there will be some other humanitarian cool trend in a month". very good jay. such a learned and percipient skeptic.

Except I first read about her last month. Very few people cared then. Many care now because people have riled up the mob. It's a trending twitter topic now. So trendy.

It's pop culture and chasing trendy topics, uzique, not activism.

so instead of acknowledging that it's actually a symbol of the gay rights struggle, you're angry like a ten-a-penny hipster because 'nobody cared about this when it was relevant'. well done jay. walking to work in your hipster backpack declaiming that everyone is shallow.
