The stupidity of DoMA hit home last night for me. We were out to dinner with two of our friends that are a lesbian couple and the conversation got around to the difficulty one was going to have in securing a visa when she finishes her studies in England this May. She has to secure a job first and then apply for the visa and deal with a whole drawn out tedious process before she can move here.

By contrast, my cousin recently moved home from Argentina where he lived for two years, and he brought home his girlfriend. He's planning to marry her in order for her to secure a green card so she can stay here. Whatever, not really fraud as they were likely to marry anyway, my countries immigration policies simply speed the process.

Even though gay marriage was recently legalized here in New York, that option isn't open to them because of the legislated discrimination known as the Defense of Marriage Act. The federal government does not recognize any of the gay marriages performed at the state level and thus, among many other things, they can't do the marriage for green card bit available to straight people. It's a small thing, sure, but I'd hate to be in their shoes with all the hurdles they have to clear just because of bigotry.
By contrast to both those, my ex-gf knows some gay men in the US who offered to 'marry' her so she could move there nice and easy.

Pure communism has no private sector. All employees are employed by the state.

And reality/real world results say it doesn't work, not just people on this site.
you are missing the point. again. communism is an utopia. but so is government which only does what you described above.

I never really understood why a soldier with my same rank got paid more because they had more kids.
You do the same job I do, but because you have kids, you're somehow entitled to more money?
Really?
Do you work harder than I do at the same job?

Here's a novel concept - If you barely make enough money to support your current family, don't go adding more kids you can't afford!

I dont see how a family of four living on a an elisted man's salary would be able to claim welfare. unless, that same soldier had financial problems that are forcing alotments out of the pay check.

See that would piss me off because I'm the sort who would delay having kids so I can earn more money, not the other way around.

I think the question that needs to be answered here is: if two people you never will meet living one street away get married, does this ever affect or concern you in any way? And if the answer is no, would it then matter if they are a hetero or gay couple?

Slim majority of Americans approve of or have no problem with gay marriage.

"It's been the same each time we ask — about 2-1 in favor of same-sex marriage," said survey center director Andy Smith. "It's not an issue most people care about one way or the other. Proponents are very much in favor, opponents are very much opposed. But for most people, it's a shrug."
That seems about in line with what I've experienced.

North Carolina is poised to become the 31st state to add an amendment on marriage to its constitution, with voters banning same-sex marriage and barring legal recognition of unmarried couples by state and local governments.

North Carolina would be the last state in the south to add such an amendment, and supporters hoped for a resounding victory.

Incomplete returns show the amendment up 59.72 percent to 40.28 percent. Some large counties, including Durham and Mecklenburg have not reported results.

Primary turnout was heavy. Though there were many other races on the ballot, including primaries for statewide offices and congressional seats, the amendment appeared to drive much of the political discussion.

Marriage rights for gay couples has been a topic of national debate this year, and North Carolina’s amendment and the campaigns for and against it drew international attention.

North Carolinians think of the state as progressive, but that’s within the context of the rest of the South, said Andrew Taylor, a political scientist at N.C. State University. “This is a socially conservative state,” he said.

You clearly don't understand the reference. We have these "judge" shows in the US that play during the weekdays. They are ridiculous, regardless of the people on them--who are mostly lower-class (both financially and figuratively).

BL: His post was loaded with sarcasm, making fun of those shows...not gay people.

Gay people should be allowed to get married, or at least be recognized legally in the same manner as a traditional man-woman marriage. It is ridiculous that this is even still an issue.

Instead of wasting time and money on this bullshit, perhaps people should spend their efforts on fixing more pressing and more important issues.

Recognised legally - fine. Thats pretty much the case in many places already.

Demanding the legal and religious definition of marriage be changed to include gays is as dumb as a vegetarian demanding the definition of carnivore be changed to include people who don't eat meat. Its beyond retarded.

is the word "marriage" as well as "family" and such included in actual legislation? because, you know, it could be an issue. re-writing a fuck tonne of laws and regulations to include whatever they'd decide to call gay couples would be quite a hassle. it could actually be easier (from purely pragmatic pov) to just let them call it marriage and start spending efforts on fixing more pressing and more important issues (c).
