After being a loyal Microsoft flight sim user for many many years, I decided to give x-plane 9 a chance.  I have to say it beats FSX hands down.  This is not a well known flight sim by any means.....but it should be.  I believe this sim is truly meant for those who fly or want to fly in real life.  It is much more realistic in almost every way.  It definitely took some getting used to that's for sure.  It is not as user friendly as fsx, but maybe it is because I am not truly used to it yet.  I recommend it for those of you who may be thinking about upgrading to fsx, or just want something new.  For those of you who do not know me, I have a Commercial multi-engine pilots license, flight instructor licence, advanced ground instructor licence, airframe and powerplant mechanic licence, and a flight dispatch licence.  I flew CRJ-200's for a regional airline before an eye disease ruined that for me.  So, I know airplanes and sims very well.  Its about all I know really.

Like I said, it will be VERY different to those of you used to microsoft, but it is worth it imo.

FSX $49.99   X-Plane 9  $39.99

Breakdown:

Scenery: xplane
ATC Realism: xplane
ATC voices: FSX
Hop in and fly: FSX
Read the Manual!: xplane
Water realism: xplane
Weather: xplane
Extra downloads and payware: FSX
Airport Scenery: FSX.  But, xplane is more about flying realsim
Aircraft Realism: xplane
Least Difficult: FSX
Sound: FSX

I tried xplane and it wouldn't run on my pc at a decent framerate, it looks like an excellent sim nonetheless. I'm more of a combat flight sim guy myself, I like to fly LO:FC and Falcon 4. GTFO HAWX this is a real flight sim thread.

that is true, you need a "strong" PC to run it so to speak.

I used to have a cracked CD of X-Plane(I think it was version 7)

A friend of mine gave it to me in Russia, there you can get any popular game or program for about $5(Well used to, they've cracked down on the flea markets last year when I was there)

Those wise Russians even cracked WoW to run on custom servers with no monthly fees (I don;t want wow tho)

I saw ads for it in my Flying magazine (do you get it? It's great...) pretty much every month and was debating getting it...FSX has taught me a lot about flying. In 1 1/2 months I start flying lessons, so I'll probably pick this up.

Flying mag says it's got over 60 gb of scenery? Is all of that installed on your PC?

I'm still waiting for FS11.

The good thing is you can choose what to install.  By default you have to install the US scenery.  But then it is up to you if you want to install europe, africa, south america, etc.  I have them all installed because my comp can handle it.  But, I think it is a good option for those who cannot.

Well I'd probably only stick with Europe and America...but I'm picking up a 500 GB HDD later in the year anyways, so I'll probably put it on that. Pretty crazy though.

Have you played it with a joystick? I've got a logitech attack 3 that works quite well with Cessnas and Beechcrafts in FSX. Hell, it's even decent with a 747...I figured I'd need a yoke to fly properly.

I can do it now, though haven't done it for a while.

Had to set the flaps or something to take off

Yeah I hate that in FSX...it's not really so bad in the Beechcraft and Cessnas, but when you're in a 747 or A320 it's like "WONK WONK WONK WARNING WARNING PULL UP TOO SLOW".
