i want a new macbook 16 to be released with the apple chip. their performance gain is just insane. they are now definitively a generation ahead of intel/amd when it comes to mobile chips/GPUs.

an OLED screen would be nice too. and a 1080p+ webcam. and faceID rather than touch to unlock. but these are very much fine points on an already super impressive base.

i doubt they’ll release one in time before i fly out to seoul. too bad. buying apple gear out there is an expensive nightmare.

Does Apple Store have any decent trade-ins for recent models? Also, if they don't show up in time, couldn't you just order it to a friend's place and have it shipped to your new location?

yeah they almost actively encourage it. you can click a tab in OSX/diagnostics and it’ll tell you the refurb price for your model at the apple store. they’re huge on recycling or refurbishing their machines now.

shipping anything to korea is a nightmare. customs are very strict. it’s just not worth it for a myriad of reasons. i’m happy with my apple gadgets, anyway. it would just be nice to have a brand new 16. im going to be working from cafes a lot.

Well even if you don't get it now, you could get a second generation down the road. Learning/learned Korean?

Apple trade-in questionnaire:

First, who made it?
[] Apple
[x] Other

Based on what you've told us, your computer is ready to recycle.
Do I maybe detect a little burn there, lol.

Lots of other eligible devices, I wonder just how much credit I can stack.

they’ve taken out a patent on one of those fancy light-absorbing materials so that they can have a properly blacker-than-black model. you know people will go nuts for it.

Hard pass. I like metallics, grey and white and am opting for those whenever i can. They really stand out in an entertainment center aesthetic. I have more than enough black-chassis electronics. Many of which have unnecessary, blue LEDs that I just end up putting electrical tape over.

One of those special blacks would probably add cost that I'd rather put into more RAM.

i had the blackbook circa 2008/2009 and it was a really cool piece of tech. looked genuinely different back then, especially considering most laptops were that generic IBM grey or the more popular MacBooks were in that sort of plastic white finish. the black book genuinely stood out then and had a really nice, rubbery-matte finish to it. i would buy something in that form factor again, tbh.

agree that a super-fancy space-age nanotech light-absorbing black laptop isn't that interesting today. most all laptops are black or metallic nowadays.

the space grey 16 is one beautiful piece of kit. the retina MacBooks going back to 2015/2016 are beautiful, also. i still remember how astonished i was to get my first one, just how thin it was considering the amount of horsepower under the hood. super beautiful design. shame that the latest-gen ones have taken the minimalism to the nth degree and ended up removing 40% of their connectivity and I/O.

why can't all tech look this good?

I suppose there's something to be said for a chassis that looks comically terrible. I know there's intentionally ugly competitions, but I don't think most of it is intentional. Take the legendary

Interesting concept isolating heat sources from each other, but having a bunch of your fans on a permanent tilt will usually cause them to wear out sooner than later. Also, yuck.

IIRC this thing was like $1800. I don't even know where to start on the visual design. It's like a fusion of a craft engine and a gaudy kitchen appliance.

I am self-aware though that I don't have much solid ground to stand on here. Behold, the HAF-X:

Agree with a lot of points made. Absurdly difficult to clean (machine-compressed air, q-tips, and denatured alcohol), and no part of it "looks good." But its air cooling profile is still fantastic. With some modding, I could easily fit some water cooling if I had half a mind, but it is currently filled with chocolate-brown noctua fans. Hidden in my desk's computer enclosure out of sight. Not about that life anymore!

pc gamer aesthetics are cancer. it doesn't stop with stupid tower chassis, either. peripherals, monitors, gamer chairs ... the whole thing is just full of extruded plastic and garish LEDs. truly some of the most tasteless tat in any consumer market.

Sadly the HAF X is still one of the top contenders for air cooling to this day. When I bought it, that and the generous drive bays were really what I was looking at. Then case companies I guess saw the sales and figured "they're buying 100% for the looks. Forget airflow, make it look like Megatron!" If I had more machining tools around I might try my hand at creating a few boutique cases on the side with the killer cooling profiles and *ahem* adult aesthetics.

It's still kind of annoying to me that jaggy gamer hardware carries on, yet actually useful PC gaming peripherals (that don't look like they'll cut your hands) like the Force Feedback 2 have to be hunted down on ebay. Production on that ended in the early 2000s. Where would it be now if we saw continued iterations …

Amazon sent a $200 hard drive in the plastic wrapper they send cheap items in. I am have very miffed. The box looks fine but if you gently shake it you feel a little movement in the box. Am I in the right to send it back for a replacement?

If it's any comfort, newegg sometimes messes up on packing too. Great opportunity for me to bring it up. If I brought it up on my own I'd get slammed again for wanting things shipped to me in one piece. The nerve.

It's really up to you. If it's an amazon fulfillment, they're usually pretty chill with that sort of thing and probably won't question you. I've emailed them about receiving two of an item (not inexpensive) before and they just told me to keep the spare.

Do you think it is possible for the drive to have been damaged in shipping even without the box visibly damaged. Also new avatar

I checked my SATA ports and I have the space to set up a RAID. So I am going to keep it and buy a second one. I am going to do the order over the phone with Amazon and tell them to put a note to package the box securely.

Totally possible for a mechanical drive to be damaged in shipping. They're a little more hardy than they used to be though, so I'd say 90% fine. Just run it through the regular stress/health tests and make sure you're eligible for mfg warranty.

If you want a second one, some manufacturers may just ship directly to you and probably have more secure packaging.

I called Amazon about the order and reordered the same HD but they included a note on the order and also on my account to better package the item and all other items. I am pleased. Thank you for the help uncle Newbie.

Ok so I installed the disco disk.

I have some of those, I have like 5 old hdds I occasionally backup to cause why not.
pc can only hold two small drives so i have 3tb of ssd space, 2 of it for media
also have a backup of the media drive that i keep in my car when i go out.
Never saw the point in RAID since everything of importance has my physical backup plus cloud.
