what new games have you played?
my last gaming PC was built in 2011 and was a similarly modest/mid-range build then. suffice to say, i couldn't really play anything from 2015--present. it just wasn't up to scratch.

i bought a 36 inch ultrawide monitor for working from home. that meant i definitely wasn't playing any games on my old desktop. i couldn't even play WoW:Classic in good settings by that point.

so i've played a decent amount of WoW:classic and a bunch of other current-gen games: modern warfare, apex legends, RDR2, etc. it's nice to know i can try out just about anything from the steam store, as well as catching up on other 'big' games, and not worry about spec.

i had to invest a certain level in a new machine to push enough pixels for my screen. the GPU/CPU combo i got can play current-gen games on max settings, just about. i'm sure i'll have to drop anti-aliasing down and some particle effects if i want 100fps+ smooth on some of the more demanding ones. i didn't need a top-tier build because i'm not interested in 4K. with my work, editing and proofing multiple documents, etc, i need as much screen space as possible; ultrawide 1440p is just more useful to me than a 4K ultra-HD screen.

i'm interested in checking out cyberpunk, just as a tech demo, if anything.

best of all, i don't have $220 tied-up in an overkill motherboard for a factory-stock clock/cooled CPU. the system i do have has OC'd CPU, GPU and RAM, and custom cooling so it runs cool and silent. turns out you cucked yourself.

I'll take another look at 4k gaming when hardware improves. Seeing RTX 2080 numbers struggle at 4k on certain settings, just forget it.

the next gen of hardware will probably be mature ray-tracing GPUs, 8/12-core CPUs that games actually use, and DDR5 RAM or whatever.

the constantly escalating resolution/detail doesn't interest me as much.

ryzen 4 will offer performance boosts over ryzen 3, but it will be like going from skylake to kabylake intel processors. everyone will still be using the same DX12 GPUs and DDR4 RAM. the processor is never the weakest part of the chain in these things, not unless you work in rendering/modeling/etc.

2600k is still getting along nicely. It tends to slow down more doing productivity stuff than gaming. Some new driver issues for the old motherboard have reduced my available USB ports.

I've got a couple 10 TB hard drives waiting for a new computer. I guess I've just been putting it off because I no longer feel enthralled with the process.

I could totally go for a 4k or 5k screen with beautiful colors right now, and I don't really care if I can game on it in 144hz or whatever.

Course I bought a keyboard before it was working again. Tenkeyless durgod white and grey. I like it.

Also got a 1660super. Cheap and a big enough improvement for vr. And runs a lot cooler. Of course hardware acceleration in Lightroom is now broken.

love my 10keyless mech keyboard. just the right size. cherry reds in mine. i've been using it for a few years and almost fancy something new just for a change. generally go with filco or topre.

Beyer 1770s for like $150 off, similar to the deal I got the 770s at years and years ago. Already have an amp in case it's needed, but I don't play things very loudly. Kind of a subjective preference, but I've heard them before and preferred the sound and fit to other brands at a similar range, and definitely over any "gamer" headphones. I've also got some spare replacement pads that should work for them, and ordered a backup cable for my parts drawer.

I did see headphones that change the position of the audio as you turn your head. Could be fun for a three-monitor setup and a space game.

I think I will experiment with modding the old 770s at some point. No other use for them now but repair practice. I imagine I could upgrade the cable to a detachable XLR and maybe install a mic if feeling adventurous.

Now to endure my $14 pair while the new ones ship. Should be here at any point from this week to next month, fwp.

depending on the impedance and response curve of the headphones, an amp might have more benefit than just 'going louder'. it's more like juicing them with the right oomph even at low volumes. some headphones are flabby and unresponsive at low volumes without amplification.

For sure. I just didn't want to get too far down the rabbit hole in that post. I'm pretty sure my current setup will be enough to drive them at 250Ω anyway, but there's an amplifier on my desk in case it doesn't.

The backup I'm using now makes a shotgun sound like a naval gun. Even opening a door can be a bit much. I guess I prefer a more neutral sound even when gaming.

Some of the 5G speedtests I've seen put my cable to immense shame. But it's American cable, so it's going to be pitiable 99 times out of 100.

It's... a bit big to be honest

Also I still can't get out of the habit of maximizing windows which usually wastes most of the screen space. Maybe I should get 2 4K screens instead...

hahaha looks so ridiculous.

yeah i've never full-screened a browser since going ultra-wide. as i told ya elsewhere, get used to using windows key+arrows to quickly snap windows to top/bottom, left/right, etc.

I draw the line at having to turn my head to see shit on my monitor. VR is also out for that reason.

I know there was an audio thread somewhere but I don't want to revive it. I'm in the market to upgrade my audio set up. Anyone got any recommendations? Right now id like to keep it around $500/speaker. Ive been looking at a few (links to follow)

I bought an Onkyo RC-160 11 years ago. Discontinued. A bit dated, so doesn't always work with everything I want it to, but it still works. At the time I did a lot of research, it came down to a choice between Onkyo and personal bias towards Yamaha.

Speakers are heavy, powered JBL portables repurposed from a traveling music bit that do a good job with whatever I throw at them (movies, music, occasional game) despite the extra complexity of adapting XLR. Even the old Casio sounds pretty rad on them.

The people going nuts for AMD's new 5000 series CPUs are weird. People are camping in front of microcenter in order to get a 15% boost over last generation. Whenever I look at the internals of my PC I think of how annoying it will be to tinker with any of it.
