That reviewer had the attention span of my pinky toe.

He didn't care to learn anything new, he just wanted everything to be thrown in front of him. Gimme gimme gimme.

God forbid you're able to make choices in a game that realistically changes the outcome.

Damn this game and damn this thread for getting me interested. It is a time vacuum from which there is no escape.

Anyways, I just started last week, and the learning curve is ridiculous. Forget about doing anything for the first couple weeks(other than learning) while your basic skills are being trained as everything requires training .

This game does kick arse though, and should provide hundreds of hours of entertainment.

do missions and get your standings up while you train skills, it helps a lot in the long run.

Stick another large shield extender in and switch the amps for active hardeners, then switch an SPR for a PDU.

Or a BCU.

To be honest, as brilliant as Yahtzee is, you can't base the most expansive MMO out on just a 14 day trial (most likely 1 or 2 days), without meeting any players in the game. That's the flaw involved in reviewing MMO's. It's like playing an FPS but not shooting a gun. I laughed at a lot of it anyway but .
No, that's the flaw with EVE nowadays.

You can pick up an FPS and start shooting (and subsequently having fun) immediately. You may not be any 'good' at it but FPS skill comes with experience, practice and general game orientation. It's the complete opposite with EVE. I'm sure EVE is a great game for all the people that have been playing it for years and now have trillionaire-corporation accounts with 17 different types of ship for each day of the 2-weeks-and-a-bit, but to a newcomer the immediate impression is:

"Welcome to the EVE 14 day trial, please queue skills for the next 30 days until you're semi-competent at anything. In the meanwhile enjoy our right-click-and-mine-random-rocks and rudimentary-insipid-repeatable-quest mini-games until you are nearer this goal. Enjoy your day. P.S. Don't forget to pay your subscription."

I thought the review was spot-on. People's criticism of Yahtzee is that he doesn't get "into" the game enough. Well no reviewer can practically spend 6 months completing / mastering a game before he writes a critical analysis, and equally no consumer or potential buyer is actually interested in knowing the game inside-out from a video review- as opposed to actually playing it and learning/finding out for yourself. He approaches games as a new player and gives a first impressions review which is really all a curious gamer needs to know. Of course he has some biases and throws smoe stuff in there for comic effect but really, the general jist of things, he hit the nail on the head.

because you dont have the skills, you don't miss them. They just go on in the background - you can have fun without them.

Just because he was an r-tard doesn't make the game fail. If he wants to spend 2 weeks flying in circles, he clearly has no idea how to play. Yes, it's explained. Yes, there's a shitton of forums about it.

You can start a character right now, train up propulsion jamming to 1 and pvp after 45 minutes ingame. Just because he's too dumb to a) follow the tutorial b) learn that eve is a PVP game, doesn't make the game suck.

But that's not even comparably "fun" to other MMO experiences. The basic combat and low-level content of EVE blows. I've played through about 4-5 EVE Online trials now and each time I've found myself losing the will to play (and live, for that matter) after about 3 days. The combat and encounters in-game are absolutely dire and unexciting... it's almost like a turn-based combat system during the earlier stages. 'I'll orbit around you and we'll take it in turns to shoot each other with a laser pistol, pew... pew... pew... I win'. Even the hilarious MMO-tactic of "running away" that he described is totally lacklustre and boring; 'Oh God I'm going to die! Right-click // Warp'. Phew! That was pulse-raising!

I know EVE has strengths and fine-points that other MMO's couldn't even dream of developing or pulling off, but really the introductory stages and trial-stages of EVE in their current state has nothing that would lure an MMO-player to an EVE subscription. Perhaps if it is your first ever MMO experience and you have nothing to compare it to, perhaps then you could tolerate the 2-weeks of mind numbing grind and menial quest-repeating.

And Madkatter who are you kidding, you can go PvP in the dangerous sectors after a week of play with only Prop skill-leveling? Haha. The sad thing is that in other MMO's you literally can have a decent and involving PvP experience within the first 10 levels or few hours. In EVE the closest you get is turn-taking laser showdowns. I respect that you enjoy the game but you have to see that it really isn't alluring to your average-Joe or your newcomer. And when I say it isn't fun for your "average" Joe I in no way mean to imply that an EVE player is 'above' the average gamer. Probably quite the contrary... snore!

Again, just because you choose to ignore it doesn't make it not exist.

PVP is out there for day old characters. With a little bit of forum help and a clue, you'll have a blast.

I have to agree with Uzique, that Eve Online's beginning stages does nothing wonderful to attract new people.
The beginning of the game is tedious and boring as fuck, and to be honest, I wouldn't have kept playing it if I hadn't known several people who play it and encouraged me to keep playing.

Now I'm well and truly into the game, and I'm thanking myself that I didn't quit back then, as it is a great game.

I want to move to nullsec some time, but there's a few things I want to do first - jump clones and a sizable amount of cash being the first of them.
